A pioneering study titled “Data-driven predictions of the time remaining until critical global warming thresholds are reached” emphasises the urgency of this goal. It predicts that the world is on course to reach 1.5 degrees Celsius by the early 2030s, irrespective of future greenhouse gas emissions. This projection leverages machine learning to make precise, out-of-sample predictions, underscoring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in climate science. In tandem with AI, advancements in green information and communication technologies (ICTs) and robotics are reshaping climate mitigation efforts. Here, we highlight three innovative AI-driven solutions contributing to climate change mitigation.
The Ocean Cleanup, a non-Profit organisation, is dedicated to ridding the world’s oceans of plastic pollution. Their goal is to eliminate 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040. AI plays a crucial role in achieving this target, as their object detection algorithm enhances the collection of microplastic litter. Given the challenges associated with collecting microplastics due to their size, this technological approach is instrumental in safeguarding marine and human life from the harmful effects of plastic pollution. The algorithm’s ability to create a comprehensive map of plastic concentration “hot spots” facilitates targeted clean-up efforts.
Brahm Works, an innovative startup based in Bangalore, leverages AI to foster sustainability in India’s agriculture sector. By monitoring and optimising agricultural inputs and outputs, Brahm Works empowers farmers to achieve higher yields while minimising environmental impact. This is particularly significant in India, where balancing food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation is a pressing challenge. Through precise nutrient control of fertilisers, Brahm Works curtails greenhouse gas emissions, mitigates nutrient loss, and prevents water contamination and freshwater system eutrophication. The platform contributes to a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem.
Indonesia’s rainforests face severe threats from activities like palm oil cultivation, gold mining, and logging. Forest Foresight, a partnership between WWF and Deloitte, employs AI-driven analysis of spectral satellite imagery and geospatial data to predict potential deforestation. By considering factors such as proximity to water sources and urban areas, Forest Foresight helps prevent further deforestation. The pilot program, implemented in Kalimantan from 2020 onwards, successfully predicted deforestation in Kalimantan, Malaysia, Gabon, Surinam, and Guyana. This collaborative effort with local governments lays the foundation for preserving ancient tropical rainforests.
The integration of AI into climate innovation represents a pivotal leap forward in our fight against climate change. Initiatives like Ocean Cleanup, Brahm Works, and Forest Foresight showcase the transformative potential of AI in addressing critical environmental challenges. By harnessing data-driven solutions, we stand a better chance of achieving a sustainable, climate-resilient future.
